Understanding Digestive Enzymes: Are They Crucial to Your Healing?
The amazing work of Dr. Edward Howell taught us the crucial role of digestive enzymes and their co-workers, the metabolic enzymes. And yet, this information is still not in the mainstream. Enzymes are the workers in the body. They use the raw materials of vitamins, minerals, proteins and starches to build, cleanse and repair the cells. While there are thousands of known enzymes, Dr. Howell breaks them down into two types: digestive enzymes and metabolic enzymes.
Metabolic enzymes
are responsible for all the cellular repairs and regeneration you need to stay alive and become healthier. In contrast,
human digestive enzymes
are specifically geared to breaking down the food we eat according to its chemical components. As you can see, the uses of enzymes are varied and touch all the functions of the body. Now here's where the modern Standard American Diet (SAD) has caused huge problems. The pancreas produces the enzymes in our body, though at a slower rate as we age. But there are a limited number of enzymes, they are not infinite as some have suggested. Nature intended that our food should supply roughly half of our enzymatic digestive needs, and this occurs only on what I've termed a detox diet. What foods do? Only those foods that have not been tampered with. Heat destroys enzymes! We're talking about a
detox diet
of fresh organic fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. And well, if you want to eat meat it would have to be raw and fresh-killed. What happens when we eat cooked and processed foods without
plant digestive enzymes
? The pancreas has to beg, borrow and steal metabolic enzymes and convert them to digestive ones. This diet creates a huge burden on the body. Not only is more work going on to convert enzymes at the last minute, but we are depriving the rest of the bodily functions of needed workers. With SAD, we live to eat and digest our food, ending up with poor absorption and elimination. Do you get a sense of how the SAD contributes to premature and accelerated aging and various diseases?
So What's the Solution?
Fortunately half the battle is learning this information and trying it out for yourself. The other half is pretty simple: You need to take in the enzymes you need for each and every meal and you can do this in two ways: - I've said it many times before on this site, but I can't say it enough.
You need to add a detox diet of raw organic fruits and vegetables to every meal. Perhaps, one day they will make up at least 80% of your diet as they do mine. - Take digestive enzyme supplements before each meal.
Word of caution: like most products on the market, you'll find a great difference in true quality. Because enzymes are so sensitive to heat, many "enzyme supplements" are worse than useless. The processing has already destroyed them and you will not get any value using them.
Through the healing I experienced in the (Hippocrates Institute), I've come to know the founders and trust in their complete integrity. Quality is the first concern in all their products, and I completely trust and my entire family takes their enzyme supplements. The uses of enzymes are so crucial to the body that it's essential to take both digestive enzymes and metabolic enzymes (also known as systemic enzymes) in your detox diet. Even if you begin a complete detox diet of at least 80% raw organic plant-based food, the enzyme supplements will help to rebuild the enzyme deficit you've built up over the years or even decades.
